BJP, Cong rallies create traffic jams

Traffic in the city was thrown out of gear due to several rallies organised by BJP and Congress supporters in different parts of the city.

Rallies in areas including Rani Rashmoni Avenue, SN Banerjee Road, Park Circus and Shyambazar area led to major traffic congestion.

Vehicles remain stranded in one place four around an hour on important thoroughfares due to the rallies.

Many were found leaving the buses and walking up to the nearest Metro stations to reach to their destinations. The situation turned worse when the youth started marching in rallies outside Jadavpur University.

Senior officers of the city police’s traffic department helped their subordinates to keep the vehicles moving.

But it took around one and a half hour to clear the congestion after the rallies were over. Police were found diverting several cars through narrow lanes at many points to clear the congestion.

Manoj Ghosh, an employee of a health care centre near Rabindra Sadan Metro station, said: “I got stuck for around an hour while returning from Jadavpur due to the traffic congestion.

The police should not give permission to hold such rallies on weekdays as it cause immense inconvenience to the common people.”
