'Won't link my mobile number to Aadhaar'

Kolkata: Opposing linking of Aadhaar with mobile phone number, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said she will not comply with it even if her phone connection is snapped. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) accused the Union government of "autocratic" rule and said her party will "have to play a role so that BJP is removed from power" at the Centre.
"They (Centre) are interfering in the people's rights and privacy. Aadhaar number should not be linked with one's mobile phone. I will not link my Aadhaar number with my mobile even if my connection is discontinued," she said at the extended core committee meeting of the TMC.
"They (Centre) have unleashed an autocratic rule in the country. No one can raise voice against them, else I-T, ED, CBI will be unleashed," Banerjee alleged. She said the TMC will protest even if all its party leaders are sent to jail. "We are not cowards," she said.
The Chief Minister described the decision of linking Aadhaar with mobile phones as an attack on privacy and said: "I am not bound to make all my personal conversations public. After you link Aadhaar with your phone, even personal conversations between husband and wife will reach the BJP office. What does BJP want? Do they want to listen to people's secrets? We are taking up the issue in and out of Parliament. If need be, we may fight it legally too."
The CM urged all and sundry to protest in a similar manner. "How many telephone connections will they disconnect," she questioned. The CM maintained that her party has already accepted the decision to link Aadhaar with PAN since it involves income tax collection.
