Unable to name party chief, Congress names Sonia interim president

New Delhi: Finally, the suspense of Congress president has come to an end after the Congress Working Committee (CWC) members agreed to appoint Sonia Gandhi as the interim president of the grand old party.

The CWC took the key decision after Rahul Gandhi again refused to accept the suggestions of the five sub-committees, which were formed earlier in the day to securitize names of potential successor to Rahul Gandhi suggested Gandhi scion's name to lead the grand old party.

However, as per sources, Sonia Gandhi was also reluctant to accept the recommendations of the CWC, but as the CWC members mounted their pressure, she accepted to lead the party for a certain period. The decision of Congress chief was taken after a 12-hour-long marathon meeting that commenced at 11 am and ended at 11 pm on Saturday.

Rahul Gandhi, who joined the CWC meeting in the second time, told reporters that he was called in the meeting as the issue of voice in Kashmir was raised.

"The meeting of CWC members are still on. The CWC met for the second time to discuss the names of next Congress president, but in the meeting it was discussed that situation is not as what the BJP government is portraying in Kashmir. There are incidents of violence in the Kashmir. I was called for that issue only," he told reporters after coming out of the crucial meeting.

Sources said during the process of consultation with state PCC chiefs, Congress legislature party leaders and party MPs, there was a consensus on Rahul Gandhi continuing as party chief.
