Srinagar LS repoll: NC writes to EC for free & fair polling

Opposition National Conference today asked the Election Commission of India to take steps to ensure free and fair polling during the re-poll exercise on 38 booths of the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat tomorrow.

The NC wrote to the Chief Electoral Officer of Jammu and Kashmir and also to the ECI and put on record its concerns about the electoral process ahead of the re-poll.

Large-scale violence had marred the voting in the Lok Sabha constituency on April 9 during which eight persons lost their lives. The Election Commission yesterday announced re- poll on 38 polling stations.

The NC has sought certain safeguards to uphold the integrity of the democratic process, a party spokesman said here.

He said the party sought specific measures from the Chief Electoral Officer of the state in light of "unforeseen" and unprecedented circumstances and "questionable" role of the state government during the polling on April 9.

The spokesman said senior party leaders earlier called on the Chief Electoral Officer and put forth these concerns before officially writing to him and to the Election Commission.
