Barricade wire snuffs out biker's life, seven policemen suspended

New Delhi: In a freak accident, a biker was killed early on Thursday when his neck was fatally slashed by a wire tied at a police roadblock in west Delhi, following which an Inspector was transferred to the police lines and seven others suspended, police said.
Abhishek, the only son of his parents and the sole breadwinner for the family, was returning home in Shakurpur J.J cluster at 1 a.m. when he was fatally injured while passing through four barricades put up in Subhash Place police station area.
"Apparently, he could not see the wire due to darkness. His neck was slashed by the wire tied between two barricades. He died on the spot. We are waiting for post-mortem report to ascertain the exact cause of death," Deputy Commissioner of Police Aslam Khan said.
"Initial investigation pointed to negligence of the area Station House Officer, four Constables, a Head Constable and a Sub-Inspector and an Assistant Sub-Inspector from the division staff. We have sent SHO Arvind Kumar to the district police lines.
"Head Constable Jitender, and Constables Balkari, Ravinder, Mukesh and Gaurav, and division officers -- SI Sandeep Dabbas and ASI Ravinder -- have been suspended for negligence in duty. A case has been registered against them and a probe is underway," the officer said.
Nitin, a friend of Abhishek, said the victim was returning home from a wedding where he had gone as a disc jockey.
"His neck got entangled in the wire, following which he lost balance and the vehicle crashed into a road divider. The back of his head hit the road.
"His life could have been saved had there been any Beat Constable on patrol duty in the area. Area people say Beat Constables deployed for patrolling often go to sleep after putting up barricades during night hours. A local informed police about the accident but police did not take him to nearby hospital on time, which led to his death," Nitin alleged.
