India now 5th worst COVID-19 hit nation

New Delhi: India has become the fifth-worst Coronavirus-hit country in the world as it surpassed Spain on Saturday. According to data compiled by John Hopkins University, the total number of confirmed cases in India stands at 243,733 as opposed to Spain's figures of 240,978. On Saturday morning, Health Ministry data said that the total tally of COVID-19 cases climbed to 2,36,657 after registering the biggest single-day spike of 9,887 fresh cases in last 24 hours.

Other worst-hit countries that are ahead of India are the US, Brazil, Russia, and the UK.

With 294 new deaths in the last 24 hours, total fatalities related to COVID-19 rose to 6,642. Out of the total number of registered cases in India, 1,15,942 are active while 1,14,073 people, after getting infected, have recovered at the rate of 48.20 per cent.

Meanwhile, the ICMR has conducted total 45,24,317 tests at its 742 labs that include 520 government diagnostic centres and 222 labs in the private network. The apex research institute has conducted 1,37,938 tests in the last 24 hours.

Of the total 6,642 fatalities, Maharashtra tops the tally with 2,849 deaths followed by Gujarat with 1,190 deaths, Delhi with 708, Madhya Pradesh with 384, West Bengal with 366, Uttar Pradesh with 257, Tamil Nadu with 232, Rajasthan with 218, Telangana with 113 and Andhra Pradesh with 73 deaths.

According to the health ministry data, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country are from Maharashtra at 80,229, followed by Tamil Nadu at 28,694, Delhi at 26,334, Gujarat at 19,094, Rajasthan at 10,084, UP at 9,733 and MP at 8,996.
