Man shot dead, four women allegedly gang-raped on Yamuna Expressway

Four women of a family were allegedly dragged and gang raped by six armed men in a field and one of their relatives was shot dead in Jewar area of Greater Noida on Thursday, said police.

The incident took place in the wee hours of Thursday. A FIR has been lodged against the unidentified assailants in the Jewar police station. However, no arrests have been made so far.

According to the police complaint, eight members of a family including four men and four women were travelling in a Maruti Eeco van to Bulandshahr from Greater Noida's Jewar to meet an ailing relative.

At around 1:30 am, the driver stopped the car to check the tyres. On seeing the two front tyres deflated, he called one of the relatives for help. As soon as the occupants got out of the car, a group of six unidentified men with country-made pistols encircled them. Following this, the gang took the entire family to an isolated spot. The men were tied up and beaten with rods. But, the women were taken to another spot where they were allegedly raped one after the other.

The 45-year-old relative who tried to resist the alleged rape was shot dead, said sources.

"While one of the male relatives tried to resist the assault on women, the miscreants shot him twice from point-blank range. The impact was such that he died on the spot while others were tied with duppattas. The miscreants continued raping the ladies one by one for over one and a half hour. After police reached the spot, they fled away taking our valuables such as mobile phones, cash, and jewellery, " said one of the family members.

"They didn't even spare a 50-year-old woman who pleaded a lot in front of them but was brutally raped by them," recounted another family member.

The police said that the women were harassed but the sexual assault will be confirmed only after the medical test. However, the victims are not allowed to interact with the media and the resident doctors of the district hospitals remained tight-lipped.

"A FIR has been registered under sections of murder, robbery, and assault. A man has been murdered while the others have been assaulted. Medical examination of the women who were allegedly gangraped has been been conducted The reports are awaited. The post-mortem is being done and police teams are working on the case. We are exploring every possible angle. We will soon nab the culprits," said Love Kumar, senior superintendent of Gautam Budh Nagar. He also stated that four teams have been formed to nab the criminals. "A team comprising officials from the special task force and other three teams that include members from the local police and SOG," added Kumar.

The incident is reminiscent of the horrific gang rape of a woman and her 14-year-old daughter in July last year when they were travelling in a car from Noida to Shahjahanpur. It took place on the national highway passing through Bulandshahr. The family was travelling from Noida to Shahjanpur in Uttar Pradesh to attend a funeral.
