Bengal wins bitter battle over its iconic mishti

Kolkata: The two-year-long bitter battle between two neighbouring states — Bengal and Odisha — over rosogolla came as a "sweet victory" for the state after the Chennai-based Geographical Indications (GI) Registry announced that it originated in Bengal and not Odisha.

The celebration of Bengal's win over Odisha in getting the GI tag for rosogolla began with a tweet of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday morning sharing the news: "Sweet news for us all. We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI (Geographical Indication) status for rosogolla."

Soon, people from all walks of life including ministers, actors, authors and commoners started giving their reactions rejoicing over the decision that came in favour of Bengal. Welcome the ruling in favour of Bengal, Partha Chatterjee, minister of the state for Higher Education, Science and Technology and Bio-Technology, said: "The unnecessary tug of war was going on over the GI tag of rosogolla. They were also well aware that rosogolla's invention took place in Bengal… Rosogolla has also got relieved from it. I congratulate the officials of the department who had carried out the research work."

Asish Banerjee, former Biotechnology minister, said: "I am happy that Bengal has got the patent for rosogolla. We had taken all the necessary steps and carried out measures to establish the truth after being confident that Bengal is the place where the sweet was invented."

It was on September 8 in 2015 when the state government had moved to get the GI tag for the sweet of which both Bengal and Bengalis are known for.
