All schools in Delhi to be shut till further orders, says CM Kejriwal
New Delhi: The Delhi government which had earlier opened the doors of schools in the Capital, has now issued fresh orders directing officials to shut down all schools — both government and private — in the city until further orders. Fresh directions are issued in light of the ongoing COVID-19 surge.
Soon after the order was issued, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took to Twitter to announce the decision. He said, "Due to increasing cases of COVID-19, all schools (including government and private) in Delhi are being closed for all classes till further orders."
"In view of the sudden surge in the cases of COVID-19 in Delhi, all the Heads of Govt., Govt. Aided and Unaided Recognised schools are hereby informed that conduct of all Academic and Examination Activities through physical mode shall remain suspended with immediate effect till further orders," the order stated.
Even though classes were already suspended in the city, students of classes IX to XII had to attend schools because of their board exams.
"They are further directed to ensure that no student of Classes IX to XII is called in the school physically for any kind of Academic or Examination Activity (like practice of Practical, Mid-term &Annual Examination related work, i.e, Practical, Project Submission, Assessments etc.) till further orders," the order elaborated.
The decision was taken after COVID-19 cases in the Capital saw a dramatic surge in the last few days. Health Minister Satyendar Jain had also recently said that the younger population was getting afflicted more by the virus in the fourth wave of the pandemic.
Several states and union territories have announced new restrictions a spurt in Coronavirus infections.
On Friday, Delhi recorded its second-highest daily COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began last year, reporting over 8,521 new cases and 39 new deaths. Active cases in the city have now risen to over 26,000 and the daily positivity rate is at 7.79 per cent.
