No mining renewals for Goa miners, says SC

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday set aside the mining lease renewals granted to several miners by the state government.

The apex court order has come as a big setback for the mining companies in Goa.

There were a total of 88 mining lease renewals allowed by the Goa Government.

A division bench of the top court, headed by Justice Madan Bhimrao Lokur, set aside the state government's order renewing lease licences to several mining companies in the state.

"We are setting aside the state government's order," the bench of the apex court said in its order.

The top court said in its order that the mining activities would only be allowed till March 15, 2018.

The petitioner in the case, Goa Foundation had challenged the mining lease renewals allowed by the Goa Government. The petition of Goa Foundation had stated and claimed that the licences renewals of these many mining companies were illegal and should be quashed.
