New Delhi: In a major relief to patients of six states, including Bihar, all new six AIIMS — Patna, Rishikesh, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur and Raipur, are all set get fully operational from June onwards as the facilities of bed, modern machines and operation theatre are almost complete.
With the completion of the capacity building process in all six new AIIMS, it seems patients from the states of Bihar, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh would need not to visit AIIMS, Delhi for better treatment of critical diseases as they would get similar services in their own home states.
According to a senior Health Ministry official, the process to appoint faculty members is almost complete.
"As of now, all the six AIIMS have faculty strength of about 800 doctors, which would be 1,200 by June. Similarly, the bed capacity in all these premier institutes is about 2,700 until January which would be 5,760 by June. So every AIIMS would have 960 beds till then, which is quite enough to start operations fully," the official said.
According to the latest report, which has been analysed by Millennium Post, the major improvement in the capacity building took place after January 2016 onwards as there were only 348 faculty members for all six AIIMS in January 2016 which rose to about 800 in January 2018.
Similarly, there 1,289 beds in January 2016, which increased to about 2,700 by January 2018, while all the six new AIIMS which were conducting 10,666 major surgeries in January 2016 rose to 21,229 till January 2018 and there were 9,198 minor surgeries performed till January 2018 against 4,495 such procedures in January 2016.
Commenting on the achievement, the official said, "It is the result of dedicated efforts by concerned officials. Since getting the faculty of the AIIMS-like standard is really a great challenge, so we conducted several rounds of meetings to finalise the appointments and took key decisions such as selection of doctors from AIIMS-Delhi and abroad."
A system has also been established for the visit of faculty and paramedics from upcoming institutes to AIIMS, Delhi for giving them exposure to latest techniques and best practices in healthcare and medical education, the official said, adding that 52 faculty members have been hired for Patna, while orders have been issued for appointment of 86 more.
Notably, the setting up of these six new AIIMS was announced during the regime of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2004.
