10 Ayyappa devotees from T'gana killed in road mishap

TIRUCHI: Ten Ayyappa devotees hailing from Telangana State were killed, and five others were injured when a trailer lorry rammed the van in which they were travelling on Tirumayam by-pass road in Pudukottai district, Tamil Nadu on Sunday.

The fatal accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when a group of 15 Ayyappa devotees were returning to Telangana from Sabarimala in a van bearing registration number AP 28 TD 6809.

The trailer lorry which came in the opposite direction collided head-on with the van.

Five occupants of the van died on the spot, while five others expired on the way as they were being shifted to the government hospital at Tirumayam. The injured five others have been admitted to the Pudukottai Medical College Hospital, said police sources. The lorry driver escaped from the spot abandoning the vehicle. The bodies have been kept at Tirumayam GH.

Pudukottai Collector S. Ganesh and SP Selvaraj inspected the accident spot. The Tirumayam police have registered a case.
