Big fat B'wood wedding

Designer lehenga, new car...yeah there. Seems like a wedding already! And the story is pretty much over because it is truth universally accepted that the main protagonists will find eternal love. So Humpty Sharma cannot not find his dulhania right!?

Shashank Khaitan’s Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania is a fun caper assuming you are not expecting anything mind bogglingly different. ‘It is ok for college kids,’ said a friend who told me that she was plotting ways to kill me because I made her sit through the movie.

Kavya (Alia Bhatt) comes to Delhi to get that Kareena Kapoor wali lehenga for her wedding. She meets Humpty (Varun Dhawan) and the usual Bollywood love story ensues replete with friends, getting drunk, saving the day and things like that. Add to this dollops of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge references and odes and Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania  is over and done with. Khaitan could have well titled his film An Ode to DDLJ and it would have been just fine.

But that’s not a problem really. There is not one true-blood Bollywood lover who dislikes DDLJ. And that is what saves Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania  because frankly there isn’t too much depth in the story.
To get the girl Humpty has to woo the dad (Ashutosh Rana) and prove that he is better than Mr Perfect Angad (Sahil Vaid) who Kavya is supposed to marry. And this is not a spoiler - the trailer told you this ages ago.
Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania ups the ante on DDLJ with some great chemistry between the co-stars. Alia is no Kajol and Varun is not SRK but they make a believable couple that you will root for. And they have sex which is leaps and bounds ahead of DDLJ - the running through the mustard fiields is not withstanding.

Shuttling between Delhi and Ambala, Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania makes all the rigmarole look fun but didn’t quite tickle the ex-college kids’ funny bone. Watch it for Alia and Varun of course and because we love DDLJ and weddings.
