Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation makes strong pitch for Smart City project

During a web seminar at the Poura Bhawan on June 3, BMC Mayor Sabyasachi Dutta shared his vision of the Smart City and the way forward with residents of Bidhannagar.

BMC Commissioner Alokesh Prosad Roy, Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council Chairman Saumen Chakraborty and BMC advisor Chandrim Banerjee were also present.

The mayor started the webinar by inaugurating the new portal for BMC and the theme song for Bidhannagar Smart City initiative. He insisted that Bidhannagar is on the right way to become a Smarter City by participating in the competition that the Government of India has launched through the smart city mission.

Dutta stated that providing amenities and services to the public at their doorstep, recharging ground water and providing quality drinking water, and providing integrated smart governance will be among the thrust areas for the smart city initiative.

During the webinar, Dutta requested everyone not to waste water as it is scarce and needs to be conserved. He also advised citizens to care for their neighbours, thereby inculcating a common community feeling within Bidhannagar.

BMC is also working on smart transport facilities through mobile apps to save time of citizens while availing public transport.BMC advisor Banerjee elaborated on the mayor’s vision for Bidhannagar Smart City initiative, saying, “We intend to create an urban habitat that is ‘responsive’ to the needs of its stakeholders, ‘resilient’ to internal and external conditions, ‘responsible’ towards environment and needs of children, women, elderly… preserving & promoting its ‘Rich’ Culture of Arts and Sports.”

During the webinar, some key initiatives for the realisation of the Bidhannagar Smart City project were discussed at length, like skill development and credit linkages to the underprivileged sections of society, conversion of organic waste into organic manure, smart city LED lighting, laying of underground optical fibres, green energy initiatives and senior citizen friendly measures like “Pension Day Celebration” and eHealth (Tele Medicine) services.
