BHU violence: Detained students released; new V-C appointed

A total of 103 students of Banaras Hindu University, who were detained in connection with violence in the varsity campus, were on Monday released, an official said.

These students were taken to custody in connection with a two-day violence which spread on 20 November and 21 November in the varsity campus after a scuffle erupted between two groups of
students, demanding the earlier form of the students union to be brought back.

Meanwhile, Girish Chandra Tripathi has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor, a press release from BHU said.

Additional District Magistrate (city), Vindhyavasini Rai said, ‘103 students of BHU who were jailed under section 151 of CrPC (preventive detention) have been released from jail’.

The University, in a press release, said that 3 more students were suspended for their alleged involvement in the violence in the varsity campus on 20 and 21 November. Fourteen students have already been suspended earlier by BHU for their involvement in the violence.

The press release also revealed the name of the two faculty members -- one of them was suspended and another was given a show-cause notice. Faculty member Vinay Kumar Singh has been suspended allegedly for financial irregularity, it said, adding that faculty member Arvind Kumar Joshi has been given a show-cause notice allegedly for inciting violence in the varsity campus.
