BFC thrash Ayeyawady 5-3 in AFC Cup, QF hopes alive

Alwyn George’s double strike helped Bengaluru Football Club pull off a scintilating 5-3 win over Myanmar’s Ayeyawady United to jump to second position in Group H of the AFC Cup football tournament at Sree Kanteerava Stadium here.

For BFC, apart from George, the other scorers were Semilen Doungel, Bengaicho Beokhokhei and CK Vineeth.

With this win, BFC has six points after playing four matches and kept their hopes alive to qualify for the next round of the tournament, whereas Ayeyawady’s dreams of qualifying were shattered in a high-scoring game.

The hosts are behind defending champions Johor Darul Tazim, who are table-toppers with 12 points out of four matches, while Lao Toyota and Ayeyawady in the bottom of the points-table with three points each after playing four matches.

The first half completely belonged to BFC as they enjoyed a big percentage ball possession and making forays into the danger zone of the visitors.

Having missed a couple of close shots at the rival’s net, CK Vineeth put the hosts ahead in 20th minute before Ayeyawady equalised through Thiha Zaw in 40th minute.

In contrast to the first half, the second half was even-stevens with first BFC scoring a couple of goals and then the visitors smashing two back-to-back goals, bring the score at par 3-3.
