Best foot forward but without shoes

Cops in the city are making do with their old shoes for three months now. They were supposed to have been issued new pairs in March, but for reasons unknown, there is no stock of shoes at any station.

Whenever a cop is in need of a new pair, he could apply for it. But for the last three months, the cops were to wear their old and worn pair.

The beat constables, head constables and assistant sub-inspectors, sub-inspectors, who are expected to be on the field, day or night, are worst affected in this fiasco. Many have applied for new shoes, but their request is put on hold.

‘The soles of my shoes are worn out. Two months ago, I had applied for a new pair of shoes. I was expecting to receive them within a few days. But later I was told that there is no pair of shoes left in the unit,’ said a constable who did not wish to be named to

.

‘Now I am forced to get my old pair repaired,’ he said, adding, ‘What to do, after all, we cannot wear other company shoes while on duty.’

As per the norms of Delhi police, a personnel cannot wear shoes other than those issued by the department while on duty.

Field officers have to work for 16 hours out of 24, irrespective of the season. But this summer has been tough without proper shoes. The deputy commissioner of police (provisioning and logistics) R K Jha refused to comment on the matter. 'Contact senior officers if you want to know why there are no shoes anymore,' he said.

However, according to sources the force is left shoeless because the department recently changed the contractor for shoes. Earlier, the force was using shoes of Liberty company. The new shoe contractor’s goods also seem to elicit frequent complaints from the users.
