Bengal govt to launch Teresa Tour

The Mother House in Kolkata on Sunday virtually turned into a miniature version of the Vatican with thousands of people thronging in from various parts of the country and abroad, to take part in the grand ceremony on the occasion of canonisation of Mother Teresa.

As Mother Teresa had served the poor and the ailing for five decades in the city, the Mother House has become a pilgrimage for many people including the foreigners who thought that there could be no better place than Kolkata where they can pay tribute to the blessed soul.

People started gathering at the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity in Kolkata from the early Sunday morning. They congregated around Mother’s tomb which was decorated with a single lit candle and flowers. People prayed before the tomb and also before a photograph which was also decorated beautifully with a caption written on it: “Saint Teresa of Calcutta, Pray for us”. People clapped with joy as Mother Teresa was declared a Saint by Pope Francis. The nuns and sisters sang together as they witnessed the canonisation on the giant screens which were put up inside the Mother House on AJC Bose Road. People were garlanding Mother’s tomb. A giant television screen was also erected outside the Mother House so that the gathering visitors could watch the ceremony. People in large number thronged the street to see the canonisation of Mother Teresa on the big screen.

Ms ShuChen Wang visited the Mother House from all the way from Taiwan to become a part of the historical event. She said: “It was a special day for all of us. I visited the city only because Mother Teresa belonged to Kolkata and she had been declared a saint.”

Piyush Pimplapure, a Pune based IT employees came down in the city all the way from Maharashtra only to celebrate the occasion at a place where Mother had served five decades of her life.

“We feel proud to be present on this grand occasion. It was a great atmosphere here in Kolkata. We want to take lesson from the preaching of Mother Teresa who had spoken for peace and love.” Pimplapure said.

The nuns prayed to Mother Teresa while seeking her blessings. It had become a day of rejoice at the Mother House not only for the nuns but for all the people who came here. Missionaries of Charity had taken various arrangements to celebrate the occasion of canonisation of Mother Teresa who had served for the poorest of the poor, dying and the sick people. The sisters and nuns organised a prayer and thanksgiving ceremony after the canonisation programme was done.

Many people were seen carrying photographs of Mother Teresa, close to their chest which were taken years ago. Subir Haldar, an elderly citizen came to the Mother House from Krishnanagar in Nadia to witness the canonisation of Mother Teresa. He said: “We had a long desire to see Mother Teresa get sainthood. We all were eagerly waiting for the holy occasion.”
