Bengal govt to act tough against Duncans Group

The government of West Bengal is going to act tough against the GP Goenka owned Duncans Group for failing to clear the arrears of around 25,000 tea garden workers. The tea garden workers were in tremendous misery after the Duncans Group management closed five tea gardens few months ago.
Sources said few workers have also died after suffering from acute poverty. Despite repeated request by the state government to resolve the issue, the management showed indifferent attitude which led to massive unrest in the tea garden areas.

Looking upon the misery of tea workers, the state government had also suggested the Duncans Group management to sell the tea gardens to some other willing tea companies if they were unable to continue the business.

According to the industry sources, two of the tea gardens were ready to be sold anytime. But at present, they were waiting for a go ahead from the Duncans Group management. A top government official said Duncans management was not showing any interest to re-open the tea gardens.

The official said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had shown her strong displeasure and ordered to take strong action against Duncans management.

According to tea industry sources, Duncans owned tea gardens were fairly well-known ones.
