Bengal govt aims to clear commercial tax litigations

As the Centre plans to roll out Goods and Services Tax (GST) from April next year, Bengal government wants industry to clear the litigations over commercial taxes.

“We have brought reforms for ease of business in the state. There are 7,000 commercial taxes litigation cases pending in the state. The traders have been moving court to win over the cases for long. But no solutions have been made yet,” state Finance Minister Amit Mitra said at the 15th India International Mega Trade Fair (IIMTF) being held from December 16 to 26.

The state government proposed them to pay taxes at a rate of 30 per cent for disputes over input tax credit and walk away from the problems.

Mitra said on disputes related to turnover pay just 60 per cent of it to concentrate on own business.

He termed such measures as a step forward towards creating a business friendly environment in Bengal.

The minister also criticised the demonetisation drive by Centre saying that this is a really a tough time for the nation with the common people suffering most.
