Bengal gears up for rain-drenched Durga Puja this year

Now you can buy new umbrellas and monsoon wears while coming out for Puja shopping. This year there is a possibility of a rain soaked Durga Puja.

The weather scientist of Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore predicted a light rainfall during the Puja days. But, the light rains could turn out to be heavy thunderstorms, if deep depression originates.

With barely two weeks before the Puja, the weather scientists informed that a low pressure axis was created alongside Telengana, South Chhattisgarh and West Assam. Jharkhand and West Bengal will have mid to heavy rainfall for the low pressure axis which might lead a deep depression on the Bengal sky.

As a result, Kolkata and all other districts of the South Bengal will receive heavy rainfall this week. The MeT department predicted thundershowers in the next 72 hours in the Gangetic Bengal.

“It would be cloudy in the morning followed by torrential rainfall,” said a weather scientist of Regional Meteorological Centre, at Alipore.

The experts of the Regional Meteorological Centre added that these rains cannot be attributed to the Monsoon system, but this kind of low pressure often developed at the Bay of Bengal which may spread in adjacent states.

“The deep depression, which is the fallout of the low pressure, caused the rainfall on Sunday. The city life is expected to be disrupted on Monday to the end of the week. After that the depression would gradually lose its strength,” the scientist said.

The districts in South Bengal – Howrah, Hooghly, East and West Midnapore, Burdwan, Purulia would receive heavy rainfall. Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, North and South Dinajpur, Alipurduar – will have rainfall too.

Till the early Sunday afternoon, the depression placed itself in the close proximity of Kolkata and due to its strength more heavy showers are expected over the City of Joy till Tuesday.

In fact, very heavy rains also cannot be ruled out during this period.

The puja organisers, advertisers, decorators and the idol artists are having a tough time due to this untimely monsoon

“It is expected to have rainfall during the Puja days. The rainfall could be heavy enough if there will be any low pressure of wind in the sea. But all these things depend on how the sky would behave in the coming week,” a weather scientist said.
