Belgharia accident: Driver in 3-day police custody

Parimal Biswas, the driver of the lorry that had mowed down three children of a family on Belghoria Expressway has been remanded in police custody for three days.

He was arrested from Dum Dum area on Monday night and was produced before the ACJM court in Barrackpore on Tuesday. 

The police arrested 11 persons in connection with the attack on the police force, setting their jeep on fire and causing trouble in the area. Of them Munka Das was remanded in judicial custody and Samrendra Singha Roy (60) was released on bail.

In a tragic incident three children of a family were run over by a speeding lorry on Belgharia Expressway on Monday morning. The police who had gone to tackle the situation was beaten up and the vehicle was set on fire.

Chief Minister had expressed her concern and asked the director general of police to give a detailed report.

Local people alleged that the police used to take money from the lorries carrying sand and stone chip.  

In a bid not to pay money to the police, the driver accelerated and hit the children after losing control. 

They said that despite repeated complaints the administration did not take action to control speed of heavy duty vehicles.

The police said that local people had removed the guard walls in many places and were walking on the expressway. Slow moving vehicles like cycles and bullock carts are driven on the road.
