Beant Singh’s ‘killer’ held in Thailand

Tara, was convicted for his involvement in a bomb attack on August 31, 1995, which killed Beant at the secretariat complex in Chandigarh. The blast also claimed the lives of 17 others including three commandos. Soon after the blast Tara was arrested but in 2004 he managed to flee a high-security Burail Model correctional centre in Chandigarh.

Soon after the incident Babbar Khalsa International, a Sikh separatist group, claimed responsibility for the assassination.

Sources said, Tara has entered Thailand in October and was arrested in the eastern province of Chonburi after being informed by the Indian agencies. Chonburi has a thriving migrant and expat population and Tara used to work there as tour operator for Indian tourists.

In an emailed reply to Millennium Post, Thai National police spokesman Lt. Gen. Prawut Thawornsiri said, “We have seized his passport, which is apparently fake and also detained some of his local support in our area.”

“We will soon deport him to India after the completion of official procedure in Thailand. Before coming to Thailand, he has visited several places like Dubai, Canada and UK,” he said.

It was learnt Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju during his recent visit to Bangkok in November 28 tipped Interior Minister of the Royal Kingdom of Thailand, General Anupong Paochinda, about the presence of Tara in Thailand. Rijiju has visited Thailand to attend the Ministerial Conference on Civil Registration and Vital Statistics.
