Bassi calls on Dikshit

Special commissioner (administration) of Delhi police BS Bassi, who is set to take charge as the commissioner of Delhi police on 1 August, met chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Friday. Government officials said that it was a protocol meeting. It is understood that the two discussed Bassi’s role as the city police chief. A few of the chief minister’s cabinet members also met Bassi at the chief minister’s residence.

The meeting is being viewed as an assurance that there will be no further cold war between the city government and the police force. Dikshit and her son Sandeep, member of Parliament from east Delhi, were critical of outgoing Delhi police commissioner Neeraj Kumar following the 16 December gang rape incident. The two had demanded Kumar’s resignation after those protesting against the incident had been lathi-charged. Dikshit had also sought strict action against the police chief for not ensuring proper safety for women in the city.

Dikshit, who had asked for Kumar’s transfer in December, seems to have softened her stance now. ‘He is anyway going to retire in about a month’s time,’ she said after meeting
home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
