BAPL signs MoU with Malaysian firm for mfg hub

Speaking on the development at the concluding day of the Bengal Global Business Summit 2015 here, BAPL Managing Director Partha Ghosh said that SCOMI's decision to cooperate with the upcoming Aerotropolis at Andal was a clear signal of the tremendous potential of the belt.

“We feel that this proposed hub would be the nucleus and will provide an impetus with various manufacturing activities, besides giving a boost to ancillary units required by it in the region creating job opportunities,” Ghosh said.

Such a hub would produce public transport buses, coaches for metro and monorail services and OEM components, he said adding that the site proposed for the purpose would be within the industrial zone of BAPL?s airport city 'SujalaamSkycity' in Andal-Durgapur area.

Spurred by the current mood of industrial development in the state, SCOMI, known for providing solutions in the transportation industry, would set up the hub in a plot of 25 acres to be allocated by BAPL within its premises.

BAPL in its commitment towards an equitable and sustainable development of the region has preferred to facilitate setting up of the hub with required infrastructure.

This will result in an investment of about Rs 1,000 crore towards creation of modern utilities creating at least 1,000 new jobs, in addition to the estimated investment of Rs 10,000 crore in the development of the Aerotropolis, which is also expected to create over one lakh jobs.

SCOMI would now undertake a detailed demand assessment to determine the production capacity of the proposed facility, Ghosh said.

These activities would accelerate the progress of the airport city at Andal and consequently bring about equitable and sustainable socio-economic development in the Durgapur region contributing to overall industrial facelift of Bengal.

To strengthen air connectivity in the state, Pinnacle Air also announced launch of its non-scheduled airline operation through small fixed wing aircraft connecting regional airports of Durgapur (Andal), Bagdogra and Cooch Behar with Kolkata.

An agreement was signed to this effect between Pinnacle Air with Government of West Bengal and BAPL.
