Bangladesh cops hand over Avijit Roy murder evidence to FBI

“We have handed the two machetes believed to be used in the murder, a bag, the blood sample and several other evidence over to FBI,” police spokesman Monirul Islam told reporters.

He said Bangladesh police had obtained the required court permission for getting the evidence examined in the FBI laboratory ahead of handing over the material to the US investigation agency.

Police had seized two machetes, wrapped in newspapers, and the bag containing some clothes and painkiller pills, just 50 yards away from the crime scene after the February 26 hacking of Roy. The FBI joined hands in the investigation after Bangladesh accepted a US offer to assist in the probe.
Agents of the US agency have inspected the murder site at the premier Dhaka University campus and talked to slain blogger’s father, noted physicist Professor Ajay Roy.

45-year-old Roy, known for his critique of religious extremism, was hacked to death in the university area by machete-wielding assailants, who attacked the Bangladeshi-origin writer as he was returning from a book fair with his wife last month.

Roy’s wife Rafida Ahmed Bonya, who suffered head injuries and lost a finger in the attack, said she could identify the assailants as she remebered their faces.

‘Police watched while Roy was being killed’

The policemen on the Dhaka University campus did not act to save Bangladesh-born blogger-writer Avijit Roy but simply looked on while he was being killed, his widow Rafida Ahmed Banna said on Wednesday.

“While Avijit and I were being ruthlessly attacked, the local police stood close by but did not act,” Banna, who survived the February 26 attack, said on her Facebook account.

“Now, we demand that the Bangladeshi government do everything in its power to bring the murderers to justice.”

The couple, who had arrived in Dhaka from the US a few days before the incident, were returning from the Amar Ekushey Book Fair when they were attacked by machete-wielding assailants on the university campus, bdnews24.com reported. Few hours after the attack, Roy died at the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital due to the deep gashes on his head. Banna suffered severe head wounds and one of her thumbs was sliced off.
