Bamungachi murder: Quantum of punishment to be announced on April 19

Barasat District court will announce the quantum of punishment to the twelve accused who had already been held guilty by the court on April 19 for their involvement in the murder of Sourav Chowdhury which had taken place at Bamungachi in North 24-Parganas more than a year and half ago. The court on Friday had held guilty 12 out of the 14 accused in connection with the murder.

The Magistrate on Saturday told all the accused that they might face a punishment up to the life imprisonment or death sentence according to the nature of the crime. The court had also sought their reaction in this regard. The accused had told the court that they had full faith on the judiciary. 

The prime accused Shyamal Karmakar while entering into the court said that he had been framed by the BJP and he had also been fallen a victim of politics.

Shyamal and eight others ~ Suman Sarkar, Suman Das, Somnath Sardar, Tarak Das, Amal Barui, Tapas Biswas, Ratan Samaddar and Rakesh Burman were booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Three others Sisir Mukherjee, Ratan Das and Poly Maity who are in bail have been held guilty by the court for giving shelter to the accused. One of the two other arrested youth Uttam Shikari turned approver while the other Anup Talukdar was acquitted of all charges due to lack of evidence.

Chowdhury, a second year student from Mrinalini Dutta College in Birati was killed for protesting against the illegal running of a hooch den near his house on July 5, 2014. The criminals chopped his body into pieces and spread them on the railway track between Duttapukur and Bamungachi. Chowdhury was kidnapped when he was returning home that night after watching a cricket match from a local club. The accused took him to a nearby factory and was strangulated to death. Later they cut his body into pieces and put them on the railway track.
