Bagan’s top brass resigns

Three Mohun Bagan top officials including president Swapan Sadhan Bose and secretary Anjan Mitra on Sunday stepped down citing string of poor performances by the football club in the last five seasons.

“Enough is enough, we tried our best to help the club come out of the rut but could not help. As a last measure, we?re stepping down with immediate effect,” Mitra told PTI after he along with the president and club finance secretary Debasish Dutta tendered their resignation. The resignation of the trio, who have been managing the show for more than two decades (SINCE 1990), came moments after the club were shown the door after a 4-1rout against Salgaocar in the ongoing Federation Cup in Goa. “Further, we all directors of United Mohun Bagan Football Team Private Limited also tender our resignation from the company,” a statement read.

However this is seen as a “farce” by the Maidan insiders as the club election is round the corner and it’s very likely that the trio would make a come back. “The farce is all about to avoid undue criticism and fingers pointed towards them ahead of the elections,” a club insider said. Known to spend big on their coach, the club has recently appointed Sanjoy Sen in a low key announcement.

Founded in 1889, Mohun Bagan are also in the middle of a financial crisis in the wake of the chitfund scam in West Bengal and the president Swapan Sadhan “Tutu” Bose’s son Srinjoy, who is the assistant secretary, is behind the bars.

Mohun Bagan are yet to win a silverware, having not won any major trophy since May 2010 (CFL Premier Division) and this season they have returned empty handed in Bhutan’s Kings Cup and the recent Federation Cup ouster.
