Badals meet PM, seek life term for Bhullar

Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his deputy Sukhbir Singh Badal met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday seeking clemency for Khalistani terrorist Devenderpal Singh Bhullar. ‘We asked the Prime Minister to find a way so that he (Bhullar) can be granted clemency,’ the chief minister told reporters after the meeting.

The Supreme Court last week rejected a petition by Bhullar seeking his death sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment as his mercy plea had not been decided by the president for a long time.

Badal senior said the state needs peace and harmony the most. ‘We are warning the government that people are emotional. Moreover, he is in a poor health condition,’ he said.

The SAD veteran claimed if the Centre or the state government commits even a small mistake, it has to ‘pay the price.’ ‘In the interest of the state, in the interest of the country, we are asking to stop it,’ he said, referring to Bhullar’s execution.

Jail officials and doctors have said Bhullar is undergoing treatment at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences in Delhi for mental illness. Sukhbir Badal, quoting doctors, said the execution could not be carried out in these conditions.

Badal also cited the split SC judgement which confirmed death penalty and said even Germany, from where Bhullar was extradited, had opposed death sentence. Meanwhile, sources in the PMO said the government was studying the representation made by the Punjab government.
