Azamgarh boils over ex-BSP MLA’s killing

One person was killed in a police firing after unruly mob clashed with the police following murder of a BSP leader and former Samajwadi Party MLA Sarvesh Singh, alias Cipu, along with his private security personnel in Jiyanpur police station area of Azamgarh district here on Friday.

After the murder, irate people torched the Jiyanpur police station and indulged in pelting stones on the policemen. Superintendent of Police (SP) Arvind Sen also received injury in the stone pelting.

Police first resorted to lathicharge and then opened fire in which one person was killed and 12 others received bullet injuries.

Of the injured 6 have been referred to Varanasi while the remaining were being treated at  district hospital in Azamgarh. A local journalist Gyan Chandra Tiwari was also injured in the police firing.

The supporters of the deceased blamed the police for the murder as the ex-MLA. Police had refused to provide him security even after several request by the BSP leader. They said he was returning home from the police station when he was murdered.

Tension prevailed in the area even as several companies of PAC along with local police have been rushed to the spot to control the situation. The mob also torched several police and private vehicles.

Additional Director General of Police( Law and Order) Arun Kumar said that property dispute could be the reason behind the murder.
