Azam Khan has his way with Akhilesh Yadav

In the end, it was Azam Khan, the Muslim leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP) that emerged as the winner in a tiff with Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. Sources say that Khan has been again given the charge of Meerut district after he wrote to Yadav saying he should also be relieved of two other districts of which he is in charge.

It all started when Urban Development and Minorities Welfare Minister Azam Khan was removed as minister in in-charge of Meerut district because of the infighting in the district unit. There are two camps in Meerut, one which is led by Labour and Employment Minister Shahid Manzoor and the other by MLC Sarojini Aggarwal and Azam Khan has been favouring the latter.

Though Azam continued to retain the charge of Ghaziabad and Muzaffarnagar district, he wrote a letter to the chief minister asking him to relieve him of the two other districts also. In the letter, Khan had said that if he is incapable of handling Meerut then he should not be given charge of the other two districts as well. Khan though denied that he had offered to resign from the government. ‘How can I say some thing that I have not done, I am not here to weaken the government. In fact, those leaking such serious communication to media are trying to weaken the government,’ said the SP leader. Akhilesh Yadav however denied reports there are differences with Azam Khan, ‘Media is exaggerating the issue, there are no differences with Khan and he does not hold any resentment,’ said the chief minister.

This however is not the first time when differences with Akhilesh Yadav have come out in the open, Yadav had refused the recommendation made by Azam Khan to induct DP Yadav into the party.
