Auto thefts: Arrest of four gang members opens pandora’s box

After a spate of motor vehicle thefts in South Delhi, the police had tried to trace the final destination of these stolen cars, however, after arresting four members of a gang, they uncovered a ‘Mortuary of stolen vehicles’ in a godown near Meerut border.

The police have managed to recover seven stolen cars, one stolen motorcycle and the body parts of a stolen Fortuner and Scorpio Cars.

The gang was busted by an AATS team from South District, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), Ishwar Singh.

“In the month of November last year, the complainant reported that his Wagon R was stolen from South Campus police station area. A team from AATS had taken up the investigation and on January 3, the team managed to spot the accused who were travelling in a stolen Swift car from Govindpuri police station area,” said Singh.

The accused were identified as  Salman, Mehtab and Aftab. During interrogation, they claimed that their gang leader was Dilawar Singh, a native of Meerut, UP.

Furthermore, the accused disclosed their involvement in the theft of more than 25 luxury cars from Delhi and NCR and used to dispose the cars in Lucknow and Meerut, UP.

Dilwar was arrested on January 5 when he was driving a stolen Hyundai Verna car, with a fake number plate stolen from Pandav Nagar.

“The accused disclosed that they used to dismantle the stolen cars in a godown at Kaweri Colony, near Meerut Bypass, UP. A raid was conducted at the location and one stolen the stolen cars and parts were recovered,” Singh added.

After committing theft of cars, the accused persons used to dismantle the parts of the stolen car and sell the same in the scrap markets of Meerut.
