Auto-rickshaw drivers damage bus, rough up driver

Chaos broke out at VIP Road crossing near Lake Town on Thursday, after some auto rickshaw drivers ransacked a private bus and roughed up its driver following a road accident.

The incident occurred around 11.30 am on Thursday, when an auto-rickshaw in the Saltlake-Ultadanga route was hit by the bus.

Both vehicles were heading towards Ultadanga when the bus collided with the auto.

Although no one was seriously injured, the incident infuriated other auto drivers and they stopped the bus and broke its windshield in retaliation. The auto drivers also went on to beat up the bus driver.

A passenger sitting in the front seat of the bus was injured after being hit with a broken piece of the windshield. The incident led to a traffic jam in the area.

Police later reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

Lake Town police have lodged a case on the basis of the compliant by one Abdul Wahab, residing in the jurisdiction of Shyamnagar police station.

Local people said that the auto-rickshaw dashed with the bus while trying to overtake it.

After the incident, the auto driver got down from the vehicle and hurled abuses at the bus driver and eventually got into a fight with him.

The auto driver was soon joined by some other auto drivers from the same route and they all started pelting stones at the bus.

People were stuck in a traffic jam created in the area after the accident. The driver of the bus was reportedly roughed up by the auto drivers.

Police have arrested three persons for creating trouble in the area in this connection so far.
