Auto driver held for assault on woman

Police arrested an auto rickshaw driver on charges of beating up a woman passenger at Kalighat on Friday morning. Police said the accused Sanjay Jha was a resident of Kalighat area.

On Thursday night when around 50 people including the victim were standing at the queue at an auto rickshaw stand of Hazra-Behala route, the accused reached there with his vehicle. Instead of following the norms, he tried to overtake another auto rickshaw. While trying to do so, his vehicle hit the woman.

The woman received injuries on her left leg.  She cried for help. Other passengers and the victim started accusing the driver and it led to an altercation. The driver slapped the woman when she said that she would call the police. The driver also abused her.

Finding the situation taking a worse turn, another woman contacted the police over the helpline number.

The police control room passed the information to Kalighat police station.  Policemen rushed to the spot. But the driver had managed to flee with the vehicle by that time.

The passengers had taken down the registration number of the auto rickshaw that helped the police to arrest the driver on Friday morning and the vehicle was also seized.
