Aug steel output up 0.9%; world average at 5.2%

India's steel production grew by just 0.9 per cent in August compared to the global average of 5.2 per cent and China's 12.8 per cent, World Steel Association (WSA) data revealed on Friday. India produced 6.6 million tonnes (MT) steel in August this year compared to 6.5 MT a year earlier. The global production rose to 130.35 MT during the month. China produced a little more than half of the global output at 66.27 MT.

However, India's steel production growth rate in first eight months of the current year was almost at par with that of the world average at 2.5 per cent. The country produced 52.92 MT steel during the January-August period of the current year. World's steel production during the period grew by 2.3 per cent to stand at 1,050.7 MT. During the same period, China produced 521.8 MT steel, clocking a 7.8 per cent growth over the same period last year.
