Audacious robberies in biz hub leaves one dead

The police have not ruled out the probability of an insider’s role in both the cases. However, the accused – as many as eight in total were yet to be identified till Wednesday evening, said Paramaditya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central).

On Wednesday morning, traders in Karol Bagh jewellery market held a demonstration against alleged police inaction and heavy police force had to be deployed there. The protest led to a severe traffic jam in the area during peak hours.

In the first incident reported around 8.15 pm on Tuesday, a mobile phone trader, identified as Shyamlal (58), was about to down shutters when five men barged into his shop on lane 53 of Karol Bagh’s Raigar Pura area.

They pointed guns at Shyamlal and three of his employees present in the shop during the incident. The accused then tied up Shyamlal and his employees together with a long rope and allegedly took away Rs 2 crore, which Shyamlal is said to have withdrawn in the afternoon for business purposes.

They fled the scene immediately, along with the mobile phones of the victims. Later the victims managed to escape and reported the matter to the police.

A case was registered immediately and their statements were recorded. However, none of them could identify any of the accused persons. The police soon started collecting CCTV footage and questioning traders in the neighbourhood, and closed in on a few known dubious elements in the area whose names were not disclosed.

In the second incident reported around 11.15 pm on Tuesday, a 19-year-old man, working in a jewellery shop at lane 37 of Karol Bagh’s Biadon Pura, was allegedly shot dead by three unidentified men, who fled with around 600 gm of raw gold from the shop. The victim, identified as Milan Majhi, was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, where he was declared brought dead. He was shot in the head, said a police official.
