Attempting to modernise ghazal

Aamir Ghulam Ali and his father the great maestro Ustad Ghulam Ali were present in the national Capital for the launch of Aamir Ghulam Ali’s new music single ‘Nahin Milna’ under the banner of T-series group. In spite of bearing the burden of being a famous musician’s progeny, Aamir Ali is extremely hopeful about his new launch. He promises a blend of modernistic visuals with the contemporary ghazal to meet the expectations of the present day audience.

In an interactive session with the media, the father-son duo talked about the changing face of music, the unavoidable generation gap and the emerging musicians and their much talked about style.

How do you deal with the comparisons made between you and your father?
Aamir:  I don’t think it is right to compare me with my father. I would never like to be compared to him because I have never tried to copy him; he has been in this industry for so many years. He completely rules this genre. The comparison is healthy but the generation gap should also be kept in mind.

Artists don’t get the amount of respect that they should get, in Pakistan. What do you have to say about it?
Aamir: I feel it is very wrong on their part to disrespect artists. I wholeheartedly condemn the killing of artists. Being an artist is an extremely respectable thing, as it takes a lot to become an artist. They should be treated with utmost respect and such barbaric acts should not be carried out.

What do you feel about your son’s new launch? What message would you like to give him?
Ghulam Ali:  I feel he is doing a good job and may Allah bless him and all the sons in this world with all the success and happiness. I wish everyone to be in a happy space.

You were banned from performing in Mumbai by the Shiv Sena party, would you like to say anything in that regard?
Ghulam Ali: I don’t think that has got anything to do with the event I am here for. People are free to do whatever they wish to but I have more people who love me unconditionally than those who hate me. I value those who love me more than those who don’t, so there is no point in speaking about them. I am just glad that I have such a huge fan following in India and I am really thankful to them for that.

What do you have to say about the bizarre style of music which is  becoming very popular?
Ghulam Ali: I feel if a thing is constantly shown on television, it becomes popular amongst the audience. Whether it makes any sense or not people seem to enjoy it. So, over-publicising is responsible for making this absurd style of music famous. The only thing I can do for the creators of this kind of music is just-pray (laughs).
