Attacks on Trinamool Congress workers continue in state

The post poll violence continued with Trinamool Congress leaders and workers being attacked in Malda and Burdwan on Friday night.

In Malda, Anarul Islam (38), a member of the Lakshmipur gram panchayat, was beaten up allegedly by some Congress backed goons on late Friday night. The victim, who is a small businessman, is a resident of Kahala village near Mothabari in Kaliachak.

He was attacked when he reached Kahala in his car. Around 10 to 12 Congress backed goons attacked him when he got down from his car at Kahala Bus Stand.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were well aware that the victim will be visiting the place and were waiting at the bus stand armed with logs and sickle.

They started beating him and he received injuries on his head. But their plan to kill him was foiled when some local people came out of their houses hearing him cry for help. Apprehending that they will get caught, the accused fled the area.

Policemen from Mothabari police station rushed to the spot and took him to Bengitala Rural Hospital. He was later shifted to Malda Medical College and Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

A complaint has been lodged with the police out post and the victim also told the police that he had identified Congress workers Rana Mondal and Gautam Mondal among the persons who had attacked him.

Police have initiated a search in this connection but are yet to arrest anyone.

In another incident, two workers of Trinamool Congress were found writhing in pain with bullet injuries in Patrasayer forest on Saturday morning. Some passerby found both of them seeking help. They informed the local people and the police. The duo was taken to the hospital where they were admitted.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that they were attacked for supporting Trinamool Congress. They have raised allegations against CPI(M) and Congress workers for attacking them. They told the police that the accused chased them when they were working in their agricultural field. They fled inside the forest and received injuries when the accused opened fire at them.

In another incident at Bhatar in Burdwan, CPI(M) backed goons torched a rice packed godown owned by the Trinamool Congress polling agent Biswarup Roy at Nasigram.

On Friday night some miscreants raided Roy’s house and torched the godown. One fire tender was pressed into service to douse the flames.

Roy had been receiving threats for the past few days. He had even informed the police. A probe has been initiated in this connection, but the police are yet to arrest anyone.

CPI(M) and Congress leaders brushed aside all the allegations.
