At least 11 injured as toy train derails near Darjeeling

At least 11 persons were injured including the driver of a toy train on Tuesday when the engine and two coaches derailed in Darjeeling creating tension among the passengers.  The incident happened between Gayabari and Mahanadi stations on Tuesday morning, nearly 8 kilometres away from Kurseong. The toy train was going from Darjeeling to Siliguri when the accident occurred at around 3.25 pm, a senior official of the North East Frontier Railway officials said. 

According to the police, an engine and a coach of the toy train had derailed and overturned. The cause of the mishap is not yet clear. A senior official of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railways said that around 11 persons including the driver were injured in the accident and all of them have been admitted to Kurseong hospital. Rest of the passengers who escaped injury in the incident was sent to their destination by road from Kurseong. It was learnt that some persons whose injuries were serious have been shifted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital from Kurseong.

Police said that the wheels of the diesel engine jumped the tracks while passing a turn near Paglajhora and two coaches also derailed. The local residents took part in the rescue operation immediately after the incident. After being informed, the police and railway engineers reached the spot to ascertain the cause of the accident. They are yet to come up with any official statement on the actual cause.
