Assembly summons police chief

The shooting of an MLA by unidentified assailants a few days ago brought law and order situation in the city to the fore at the assembly on Tuesday. The Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs alleged Delhi police of being apathetic towards the rising crime incidents in the city.

Delhi Police commissioner B K Gupta was reportedly summoned to the assembly in connection with the deteriorating law and order situation in the capital.

As Gupta listened to the house proceedings from the officer's gallery, opposition blamed the Delhi sleuths for their inefficient policing in the city. Seldom has a police chief been summoned in such a manner when the assembly was in session.

Leader of the Opposition V K Malhotra started the discussion, 'After a long time, we are discussing law and order in the assembly. The incident of an MLA being shot was not only discussed in the city, but the entire country. MLAs should be given security and that particular case should be sent to CBI for further investigation. We also demand that the home minister resign and CCTVs be installed in every ward to beef up the security in the area.'

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who agreed that the attack on MLA Bharat Singh was shocking, assured legislators that she would try to get the security sanctioned for MLAs in the city. Dikshit promised to write to the Union Home Minister regarding the issue.

'Fast increasing population, criss-crossing traffic, economic prosperity, presence of diplomats, VVIPs and union and state government in Delhi makes the issue of security more complex and challenging. The duties of police personnel in the city are not so easy and simple as we understand. The apprehension of terrorist attack also hovers over Delhi all the time,' said Dikshit.

She also stated that the number of police personnel in Delhi has gone up from 54,503 to 78,500 and this, she observed, was still not sufficient, as evident from the incidents of attacks and threats with respect to MLAs.

Speaker of Delhi Legislative Assembly Yoganand Shastri stated that security to MLAs must be provided at the earliest as certain pockets in Delhi are vulnerable and sensitive. The security provided to the three MLAs, who were threatened quite recently, should be reinforced and made round the clock.
