Assembly passes new Amendments to VAT legislation

The Delhi Assembly on Friday passed new Amendments to the Delhi’s VAT legislation, making it mandatory for the traders in the national Capital to file return online with digital signature and proposing strict punishment for tax evasion.

Tabling the Bill in the Assembly, deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that under the new legislation, a person involved in tax evasion running into over Rs 1 crore will face up to two years in prison against the jail term of up to six months earlier.

He said traders will be able to file their returns only through electronic mode appending digital signature.
“To prevent tax evasion, government will make installation of POS device in dealers’s sale invoice system software mandatory. Government will be able to get real-time tax data through this device,” he said.
