Assaulted DU student files complaint of ragging

On Monday, a student from Delhi University’s Department of Education alleged that he had been ragged by one of his seniors.

“A senior from my institute, Lalit Kumar has been mentally harassing me for the past few days by passing unnecessary comments. Initially, I did not take them seriously. But things took a nasty turn on February 19. It was sports day for us. We were practising, when he mocked at me – I asked him not to do so. Soon after, he beat me up outside the department’s premises and abused me,” said Sanjay Shah, a B Ed student.

After the incident, he wrote a letter of complaint to the Head of the Department, Sadhna Saxena and also forwarded the same to the DU-VC, Dinesh Singh.

“I have submitted a letter regarding the matter to my HOD, as well as the concerned authorities. Coming from a small town, I had no idea about ragging – I thought that’s how seniors usually behaved. But, when it turned to physical assault, I could not take it anymore and decided to take up the matter to the authorities,” said Shah, who also happens to be the president of the students’ union at the institute. According to sources within the department, a five-member committee has been formed to look into the matter.
