Assault at Tis Hazari: Irom calls it a ‘racial act’

Rights activist Irom Sharmila, who is on a fast for over 13 years in Manipur demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), on Wednesday told a Delhi court that she was very much eager to eat if she gets the assurance that the ‘draconian’ Act will be revoked.

Terming the recent Tis Hazari harassment as a ‘racial act’, Sharmila said: ‘In Delhi and other parts of India, there is a lot of discrimination against people who hail from the North East,’ the activist told Millennium Post. 

She was present in Delhi to appear before a court, in pursuance of a production warrant. About the incident she said: ‘The incident was very unfortunate and racial. Administration or other concerned authorities should take care that such an incident is not repeated.’ 

Former Additional Solicitor General (ASG) said that the Delhi High Court has sought report of the incident from the district judge. 

On Friday, friends of a molestation victim and two women lawyers representing her were reportedly harassed by were harassed by a group of unidentified lawyers who reportedly practice at the Tis Hazari court. Indirajai Singh while condemning the act said: ‘The comment and act were unacceptable by those lawyers standing groups. Counsel accompanying the victim of molestation case received racial comments.’
