As Delhi seethes, 28 more VIPs get cover

While deployment of police personnel for VIP security was extensively cited to pass the buck in the aftermath of the Delhi gang rape, a new list of protected persons was being prepared by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Delhi police. According to Delhi police sources, few days ago a list of 28 new protected persons was prepared and handed over to the Delhi cops. ‘The new list includes member of parliaments, MPs from Naxal affected areas, few new cabinet ministers and few newly appointed Supreme Court and High Court judges,’ the Delhi police sources stated.

Earlier, in the aftermath of the Delhi gang rape which took place on 16 December in Vasant Vihar area, senior police officers had said that a lot of their force is consumed in VIP security which results in less presence of police for common people.

Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday had called for a ‘serious look’ at VIP security deployment in the Capital, saying it cannot be an ‘excuse’ for not providing security to the common man.

Senior Delhi police official said these protected persons will be provided security as per threat perception. ‘The categories are divided into X, Y, Z and Z+ category. The VIP who faces extreme threat gets Z+ security who is secured by more than 50 police personnel in total,’ the sources said, adding that, ‘A Joint Security Resume is conducted which consists of inputs by Intelligence Bureau, Delhi Police’s Special Cell Wing and local police. The threat inputs given by these bodies are forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs which then decided the category of the security to be given to a person.’
