Arrested persons remanded to 14-day judicial custody

The three accused arrested in connection with the gang-rape of a 25-year-old woman in Salt Lake were remanded in judicial custody for 14 days after being produced before the Bishannagar Court on Wednesday.

The trio – Arnab Dey, Suvendu Nath and Souram Bera – were arrested on Tuesday morning from Haroa in North 24 Parganas. Police confirmed that there were four persons in the car and the search for the fourth accused has been intensified. Investigating officers pleaded before the court to remand the three accused in judicial custody so that they could go through Test Identification (TI) parade.
The court gave the officers the permission for TI parade, which will take place in a correctional home on Thursday.

A senior police officer said that the state’s counsel would plead before the court for their police custody when they will be produced before the court again at the end of the 14-day judicial custody. The trio went through a marathon interrogation on Tuesday night. Police tried to find out the possible places where the fourth accused has taken shelter.

Teams comprising officers from both the detective department of Bidhannagar Commissionerate and Electronics Complex police station raided various places in North 24 Parganas and some adjoining districts to catch the fourth accused.

It was learnt that police also questioned some other car drivers who work for different IT and ITeS companies in Salt Lake. The drivers were questioned under the suspicion whether any of them had helped the accused to flee.

Meanwhile, forensic experts have collected samples from the Tata Sumo in which the woman was gang-raped. Experts from the State Forensic Science Laboratory will submit their reports in a few weeks.
