Arrest fuels cold war between police of states, national agencies

The arrest of Yasin Bhatkal has thrown open a bitter cold war between state police departments and national agencies across country. On target of all investigating agencies Bhatkal meant a worthy-some catch for everyone, specially Delhi Police, which have been instrumental in busting Indian Mujahideen modules transcending several states in 2011.

A Delhi Police special cell official, on condition of anonymity, said ‘it is a miss for them’. ‘We have been trailing Indian Mujahideen since 2008 Delhi serial blasts and Yasin Bhatkal should have been our catch.’

A pan-India terror module was busted with the arrest of six suspected Indian Mujahideen operatives, including a Pakistani by the Delhi Police in 2011. Yasin Bhatkal had emerged as the kingpin of the module from arrested accused interrogations.

The module was tracked down with the help of Mohammed Qateel Siddqui who was arrested from Anand Vihar bus terminus and led the police to Mohammed Adil, a Pakistani national, who was arrested from Madhubani in Bihar.

The extensive questioning of the two led them to an engineering student Abdur Rehman, a 19-year-old boy from Bihar, who was studying in Chennai. Along with Rehman, police teams, which had since been fanned out to various parts of the country, also arrested Mohammed Irshad, a 52 year-old man from Chennai and Gayur Ahmed Jamali from Madhubani.

In 2008 a coveted Delhi police inspector Mohan Chand Sharma was also killed during an encounter at Delhi’s Batla House in which two IM members Atif Amin and Mohamed Sajid were killed while two other Mohammed Saif and Zeeshan were arrested.

Delhi Police sources said that after Wednesday’s catch, senior special cell police officers had called for a meeting. ‘We would seek Bhatkal’s custody as soon as possible,’ the officials added.
