Apex cement body names Puranmalka president

The appointments were cleared at CMA’s 52nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) at which Union Minister of State for Commerce & Industry Dr  E M Sudarsana Natchiappan was present too.

The minister congratulated the Indian cement industry for completing 100 years and achieving various milestones in the field of energy conservation and environmental protection, including attaining the second position among cement producing countries across the globe. This year is of prime importance to the industry as it was in 1914 that the first cement plant was set up in India.

The more than 50-year-old CMA represents the majority of the country’s 350-million tonne (mt) cement industry.  Speaking on the occasion, Puranmalka, said, ‘The slowdown in the economy, including dried up investments in infrastructure, has adversely impacted the cement industry and its capacity utilisation. The industry has been facing a glut scenario where excess capacity is around 100 million tones and aggressive efforts need to be undertaken to catalyse the resurgence of the industry.’
