‘Anti-Islam’ film backlash spills over to Srinagar, Chennai

Dozens of Kashmiri protestors raised anti-US slogans against the controversial film ‘Innocence of Muslims’ after Friday prayers at several places in Srinagar in the afternoon.

Protests were held in Nowhatta, Maisuma, Hazratbal, Alamgiri Bazaar, Abi Guzar, Sarai Bala and some other places in Srinagar. Protestors also torched the US flag at some places in the city.

The film depicts Prophet Mohammed in poor light and its trailer on YouTube has caused violent protests in Libya, Egypt and Yemen since Tuesday.

Reports from north Kashmir's Baramulla town said that dozens of people gathered in the town square after Friday prayers to protest the blasphemous film.

Heavy deployment of police and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) had been made at sensitive places by the authorities as separatists called for protests and rallies after Friday prayers.

Earlier, dozens of local lawyers boycotted the courts in the city and carried out protest marches.

The state government has asked the union telecommunication ministry to block the blasphemous video on YouTube, stating that its carriage is likely to create law and order problems in Jammu and Kashmir, state Home Commissioner B.R. Sharma said.

All senior separatist leaders - among them Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Shabir Ahmad Shah and Muhammad Nayeem Khan - were placed under house arrest by the authorities as a preventive measure.

J&K GRAND MUFTI ASKS US CITIZENS TO LEAVE VALLEY

Grand Mufti of Jammu and Kashmir Bashiruddin Ahmad today asked all US citizens in the Valley to ‘immediately leave’ the state in wake of the controversial video which has hurt the sentiment of Muslim community.

‘The US citizens visiting Kashmir should leave immediately as the sentiments of the Muslims have been hurt by these pictures,’ Ahmad said.

The rand Mufti said the blasphemous content on internet about the Prophet is highly condemnable.

‘Everyone accepts the greatness of the Prophet and any attempt to malign his image will not be tolerated,’ he said.

Ahmad said Muslims across the world should raise their voice against these attempts and hold protests.
