Ansari files nomination, might garner Mamata's support

United Progressive Alliance's vice-presidential candidate Hamid Ansari on Wednesday filed his nomination papers for being re-elected for the post. Also present during his nomination were senior Congress leaders including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

Interestingly, Ansari reached out to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, seeking her support for the upcoming polls. Mamata had announced her support for Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday. Sources in the TMC say that most likely Banerjee will support Ansari in the upcoming vice-presidential polls.

While even the CPI extended their support to Ansari on Wednesday, though they had decided earlier to abstain from voting in the presidential poll. Ansari's nominations were handed over to Lok Sabha Secretary General TK Viswanathan, who is the returning officer for 7 August vice-presidential polls. Among those present in parliament during the filing of the nomination were Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, Nationalist Congress Party's Sharad Pawar, Rashtriya Janata Dal's Lalu Prasad, Bahujan Samaj Party's Satish Misra, National Conference's Farooq Abdullah, DMK's TR Baalu and Lok Janshakti Party's Ram Vilas Paswan.
