Another tea garden worker dies, death toll reaches 37

A 70-year-old worker of Bagrakot tea garden died on Wednesday. The tea garden is owned by the Duncans Group which is situated in Malbazar sub-division.

The victim, identified as Chandru Seikh, was suffering from various ailments and he was admitted to a hospital.

It may be mentioned that after the death of Seikh, the death toll reaches 37. Family members of Seikh claimed that his condition deteriorated a few days ago and he was admitted to the hospital. But there was lack of proper treatment before he was admitted to the hospital. He had fallen ill six months ago. He had also recovered.

It may be mentioned that several tea gardens owned by the group were closed. Around 2,800 employees went jobless when Nageswari tea garden in Dooars had been closed in January.

With the closing of the tea gardens, the workers are left with no other means of livelihood. As a result, they are left with no money for food and proper treatment. The workers of the closed tea gardens often stage agitation in the area. But nothing seems to work anymore to reopen the tea gardens.
